10 Inspiring Web Layouts

There is a large amount of incredibly creative minds out there, in an effort to share Web Designs which have inspired my design work, and helped me learn more about Graphics Design and Digital Art, I decided to highlight some of the best Website Layout Designs, on the net.

Scarlet Bits:

ScarletBits.com features "unconventional" colors which are bold and out there, which is one of the reasons I think I liked it so much. It blends it's unusual colors with a traditional Blog Layout, superb design work.

Audio Jungle:

AudioJungle.net has a simple layout as easy and intuitive to use as Google, but it still has some pretty neat Web 2.0 style design, this blend of functionality and design is an excellent example of the way a website needs to be.

Creative Overflow

CreativeOverflow.net blends photography, graphics design, and several other elements of design, into one seamless Web Layout, these types of layouts are fairly difficult, but the effect is very cool. Excellent looking website.

Tutorial 9

Tutorial9.net is very similar to Creative Overflow except the design seems to emphasize Vector artwork quite a bit more, there is alot of useful content, and a neatly arranged layout, very inspirational.

Texture Lovers

In addition to being very useful to web designers (by providing a great list of textures) TextureLovers.com also uses those textures to produce a neat looking website. The website is slick and easy to navigate, plus features an elegant use of textures which can provide some great inspiration.

Simple Bits

SimpleBits.com is a great example of a minimilistic website design, it clears out any clutter and displays it's content with simplicity, which for many designs would probably be an upgrade.

Gamer DNA

In addition to being a very creative idea, GamerDNA.com is one of the most intuitive and user-friendly web interfaces i've ever seen. Everything is Ajax powered (even the login, which is very difficult to do) and it has nifty buttons and an intuitive layout in addition to a sleek design. Very inspirational.

Joshua Ink

Joshua Ink, features a blend of nature and minimilistic style web design, which makes for a pretty easy to read website, the website also has useful content, which is always a plus!

Blurb

Blurb.com is short and to the point, it is easy to read and clearly identifies what the website is out to accomplish. Many websites flood their users with Too Much Information at first, and while content is king, you have to have a way for people to intuitively learn from or about your site, at a natural pace.

Edit Studios

Throw in a cool JQuery Slideshow, some dark texture filled text, and easy to follow easy to read text, and you have Edit Studios, sort of a clicheish website design, but inspiring nonetheless.

Things to Learn From Designing a Logo of a Pear

Instead of Designing Macs Apple Logo, How about Design a Pear Logo!

In this tutorial we will learn how to design a logo of a company that sells pears! Looks like they are getting pretty high tech these days.

Note: As a General rule every step should have a new layer.

Our Final Result of this Photoshop Tutorial, Click to View Large

Step 1
Create a new document with the following properties:

Width: 1000 pixels
Height: 800 pixels
Background Color: #b1f6ad

Step 2
Now use the Ellipse Tool (m) and make a selection like below, fill that selection with black:

Create a Circular Selection and fill it with black Tip: Press Shift to make a perfect Circle Selection

Step 3
Follow the same procedure but this time create a smaller ellipse near the top of the other circle and slightly to the left. Also fill it with black.

Add another Smaller Circle

Step 4

With both of your circle layers selected press ctrl+t (transform) and then while altering the top left vertex press ctrl+alt which allows you to skew only one side of the pear that is taking shape, move the mouse to the left until it looks like below:

Press Ctrl T and the Press Ctrl Alt to Skew only one angle of the Pear

Step 5
Now Press Ctrl+e to merge the topmost Circle with the Bottom Circle Layer

Make sure Both Circle Layers are merged

Then ctrl+click on the Layer Thumbnail this will generate a selection of your pair logo, go to Select > Modify > Contract and Contract the Selection by 10 pixels Fill that selection with white to come out with the following:

Add in a Middle White Area, kind of like an Oreo Pear

Step 6
Do the same thing as last step except for this time Only Contract by 5 pixels Fill this selection with #31e727 To come out with:

Fill the inner middle area with #31e727

Step 7
The next few steps might be a little confusing but here goes:

ctrl+click the layer thumbnail of the “Green” part of the Pear
Pull out the Elliptical Marquee and Press Alt to do a Substraction Selection and Un-Select the Top Half of your pear
Press Ctrl + Shift + I to invert your selection
Fill the inverted Selection with White

You should come up with something like below, if you find the steps above hard to follow let me know, I might make a video tutorial of this one. but basically you have to make a selection like below: (doesn’t need to be exact) Press ctrl+alt+g while the white layer is selected to mask it to the “Green” Pair Layer.

Do your Best to get this kind of a selection and fill it with White

Step 8
Now you need to change that White Area to a Gradient of White to Transparent you can do this by duplicating the white layer, and then ctrl+clicking the thumbnail to make a selection of that layer, then fill it with a white to transparent gradient with a angle to the left, set the layer mode to “overlay” you should come out with below:

Step 9
Now you need to add the following Inner Shadow to your “Green” Layer

Apply these Innser Shadow Styles to your Green Layer

Step 10
Add a bunch of similar “Pear Spots” to the top left of your pear, fill them with #23a71c and then Set their Layer Opacity to 60% to come out with:

Add a couple of Spots to the Photoshop, change layer opacity to 60%

Step 11
Use the Pen Tool to create a Stem Like Below:

And finally I added some text for the company, and some shadows around the edges:

5 Firefox Plugins a Web Developer can’t live without

It seems like over time i’ve come to rely so much on 5 Firefox Plugins that I don’t know how in the world I would ever make Websites without them. So without any further ado, and without any particular order.

Top 5 Firefox Plugins For Web Developers:

ColorZilla – Colorzilla quickly allows you to get the Hex Color Code of any color on a website, like a color of a particular site? Find it’s Hex value in a couple of seconds. There are many uses to Color Zilla.

MeasureIt – MeasureIt allows you to quickly find the size in pixels of any element of a web page, this turns out to be invaluable when trying to measure position of objects in CSS

FireBug – This is a must have for any Web Developer, Firebug let’s you inspect the DOM and manipulate a webpage live, without uploading or downloading any files. This helps you debug nasty CSS errors, or figure out cool CSS techniques you can use. Invaluable.

IETab – As the name implies you can quickly double check how things look in Internet Explorer, because unfortunately about 50% of internet users are still on IE.

Firesizer – Want to see what your website would look to someone with a 1024 x 768 browser size? What about 1280 x 1024. Firesizer will do just that, it’s very important to check your website on different monitor and browser sizes.

Anyhow, I hope this list helps. Feel free to add your suggestions about Firefox Plugins that you think should be added to this list. I’ve found those 5 plugins have saved me a ton of time, especially Firebug.
